Krenek Skull Mounts only does Skull Mounts.

Heads are skinned, most meat is removed, eyes and brains are removed; then skulls are fed to the beetles. The beetles eat only flesh and soft tissue; not harming the bone. By using dermestid beetles, the small, fragile bone in the sinus cavities remains intact, teeth remain intact, and the oils are not cooked into the bone. Boiling and maceration are alternative processes which work, but the best quality mounts are a result of beetles.

In order to maintain the most natural look, a protective coating is put on the antlers prior to the degreasing process to protect the natural color of the antlers and keep the "rub bark" in the burrs.  Our goal is to keep the antlers as they were when the deer was harvested and use minimal stain.

The degreasing process permanently removes the fat, oil, and grease (which make the skulls have a yellow tint) from the bone.  Peroxide alone will make skulls white; but over time, a skull that has not been properly degreased will turn yellow.  This may take several weeks and is the most time consuming process.

Skulls are then dried and placed in a high concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide with antlers still protected by coating.  After sufficient time in the Peroxide the skulls are dried to bring out a very clean, natural, white skull color.  If needed, antler burrs are touched up with a natural matching color stain at this time.  A clear protective coating is put on the skull and antlers to keep dust from discoloring the bone.

The skulls can then be displayed on a Krenek Skull Bracket, plaque, pedestal or left as is.
